This is a coast of collected rugs. Pieces bought for a house on Cherokee Park, inherited through three generations, picked up at an estate sale off the Circle, or chosen last spring for a new room in Lakewood Ranch. They live very different lives here — under a rental calendar, under Siesta sand, under nothing at all in a room that is used four weeks a year. Rugs are collected, washed off site by hand, dried flat, and brought back.
A hand-knotted Tabriz and a viscose flatweave off a showroom floor are not the same object, and they should never meet the same brush. Vegetable dyes bleed. Silk scorches under heat. Viscose loses most of its strength the moment it is saturated. Cotton foundations shrink if they are pulled out of the wash wet and dried under tension. Guessing is how rugs get ruined.
So nothing is cleaned until it has been looked over: fibre content, dye stability, weave construction, backing, and every previous repair or home remedy somebody has already applied — which on a rug bought secondhand in this town is rarely none. Only then does the rug get a method. That inspection costs nothing, it happens before you commit to anything, and if a rug is not worth the cost of cleaning we will say so.

Full immersion hand-washing for Persian, oriental, wool, silk, cotton and modern synthetic rugs. Dry sand and grit come out before any water is introduced, then the rug is washed, flushed until the water runs clear, and dried flat under moving air.

Rugs in that state need flushing and controlled drying, not a fan pointed at them. We extract, decontaminate, dry flat, and document the condition throughout.

Rug care advice written for a dry inland climate does not transfer here, but the more useful point is that it does not transfer between Sarasota neighborhoods either. This is a region with a serious arts economy and a great many collected textiles in it, a rental market that turns over weekly on the islands and seasonally on the keys, and — a few miles inland — one of the largest master-planned communities in the country, where almost every rug in the house is younger than the house. Those are three different clienteles with three unrelated sets of damage.
Very few of the soaked rugs we collect on this coast met a storm. Most of them met a supply line behind a washing machine, a water heater at the end of its life, a slow drip under a dishwasher, or an air-handler condensate pan that quietly overflowed into the closet it lives in and out across the hall. Water that starts clean is rarely clean by the time it has crossed a floor and reached the rug.
The other category here is the rug nobody was standing next to. A let unit between guests, a guest room in a house where two people use four bedrooms, a rug under a week of wet beach towels — the water event and the discovery are separated by days or weeks, and that gap is the whole problem. A wet wool foundation is a growing medium and a warm room speeds that up, which here means every room. Drying the surface with a fan leaves the contamination in the base of the pile and gives you a rug that seems fine for a few weeks and then does not. The rug has to be flushed, treated and dried flat with the moisture content actually measured — and photographed before any of that, because that is what an insurer will ask for.
